I stumbled across a fashion show benefiting the Life Foundation this weekend. Their cause is to stop AIDS and the spread of HIV in Hawaii. I snapped more than a few photos of these lovely models. Here’s the Fashion for Life photo set on Flickr.
Grammar Girl has generously released a free sample of her new book Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing. This sample chapter is what I would call THE LIGHTNING ROUND of Quick and Dirty Tips. Other may call this a cheat sheet. Either way, print this out and put it on your cubicle wall.
Stardust was the best movie adaptation of a Neil Gaiman story I’ve seen to date. But it’s not the same kind of wonder that I had expected since I had read the book when it was first published. This magic world had a lighter feel to it than the one in the book. The whole movie tries to balance the fairy tale fantasy w/ comedy in a Princess Bride way, but without Columbo interrupting.
If you’re familiar with Gaiman’s work, you will definitely notice the parts where Hollywood pulled their punch or covered up with humor. It was like they had to meet a comedic gag quota. But, the part where De Niro [Wash Dies] [Wash Dies] [Wash Dies] is so over the top that you think he is trying to out do Analyze This/That. But, he pulls it off well enough to watch the one time. Overall, I liked the movie as a romantic fairy tale but it may appeal more to those without Sandman expectations.
One of my favorite authors is drumming up publicity for his upcoming book by giving away the book…again. Yeah, I know how that sounds, but it worked for Cory Doctorow, so it not totally off base. Scott Sigler has podcasted Ancestor as a podiobook to over 30,000 fans and has now released a free PDF of the entire book again. If you like action oriented sci-fi with “Lots and lots of violence”, this is just the thing for you.
