I went into Chinatown to check out First Friday for the first time in a few months. The Hawaii State Art Museum had a great Live from the Lawn program of dances from around the world. The most photogenic of course was the belly dancers from Hawaii Belly Dance.

Later I went to a fashion show hosted by the Hawaii Institute of Hair Design.

I went up to Puu Ualakaa Park and today’s sunset was just a little more interesting than usual.

JPAC Arrival Ceremony

I was invited to attend an arrival ceremony for fallen servicemen recovered from World War 2 and the Vietnam war. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) holds arrival ceremonies every few months or so to honor those recovered from the field. The remains will be identified over the next several months at JPAC’s Central Identification Laboratory and be returned to their families.

Rainbow over Waikiki

Got lucky today and captured a rainbow that fits over Waikiki just so.

Free Lensing Diamond Head

I got turned on to free lensing a month or so ago. I’ve been playing with it on and off since then. My favorite technique is to make tilt-shift photos with just a 50 mm lens sticking halfway out of the camera body.

My favorite pic from that night. National Dance Week Hawaii wrapped up with a dance off and a Choreographer’s Festival hosted at Fresh Cafe.

A quick snapshot of Iolani Palace as I was on my way to one meetup or another.

I think this guy captured the Cinco de Mayo spirit better than the rest of the crowd that night.

Sometimes a random photowalk does pay off.

I miss my Tokina 28-70mm. I need to get another fast, mid-range zoom. The 50mm doesn’t quite cover enough.

Punahou Jazz Band played at the Hawaii State Art Musuem for First Friday. The band was OK for a high school band, but their vocalist has a good set of pipes and knows how to work the stage.
